Life Drawing Hens Party, What To Expect

Life Drawing Hens Party: What To Expect
If you’ve never been to a life drawing hens party before, you’re probably wondering one thing: what actually happens?
Most people have heard of life drawing. They’ve seen photos online, heard stories from friends, or spotted it while researching hens party ideas. But unless you’ve actually attended one, it’s difficult to picture how the whole experience works.
The reality is that it’s usually far more relaxed, funnier, and less awkward than people imagine. A good life drawing class isn’t about creating perfect artwork. It’s about laughs, cheeky moments, and giving the entire group something to enjoy together.

The Class Is At Your Place
Most life drawing classes take place at a home, Airbnb, holiday house, or private venue. Guests arrive, grab a drink, catch up with friends, and settle in before the activity begins. At this point, the atmosphere is usually pretty casual. The bride is chatting, the bridesmaids are organising drinks, and nobody is thinking too much about what happens next.
For many groups, this is one of the reasons life drawing works so well. There’s no rushing around town, no moving between venues, and no complicated schedule. Everybody is already comfortable in their own space before the class even begins.

Meeting Your Art Teacher
For many of our bookings, the class begins with a professional art teacher. She introduces herself, hands out drawing paper and pencils, and explains how the session will run. Everything looks exactly like a normal drawing workshop.
The bride usually assumes she’s about to spend the next hour learning how to sketch fruit, flowers, or still-life objects. The bridesmaids know better.
And that’s where the fun starts.

The Surprise Entrance
One of the questions we get asked all the time is:
“Does the bride know what’s happening?”
Most of the time, absolutely not.
In fact, some of the funniest life drawing classes happen when the bride thinks she’s turning up for a completely normal art class.
One of our most popular options is the Art Teacher and Model experience. The bridesmaids are usually in on the secret while the bride is completely unaware of what’s about to happen.
The person organising the hens party lets both the art teacher and the life drawing model into the house, Airbnb or venue together. The teacher immediately starts meeting guests, handing out drawing paper and pencils, and getting everybody seated. Meanwhile, the model quietly disappears into a bathroom or spare room to get changed and wait for his cue.
The bride usually has no idea he’s even there.
To make the surprise even better, the teacher often places a bowl of fruit in the middle of the room and starts talking about drawing techniques. The bride is completely convinced she’s about to attend a normal art class while the bridesmaids are doing everything they can not to laugh.
Eventually the teacher asks everyone to close their eyes for a short guided meditation before they begin drawing. Guests settle into their chairs, close their eyes, and try to get into a creative mindset.
And that’s when things get interesting.

The Part That Still Makes Me Nervous
After doing life drawing parties for years, there’s one part that still makes me nervous.
It’s not standing naked in front of a room full of people.
It’s sneaking through the house without getting caught.
Particularly when the booking is in a hotel-style apartment where the front door opens directly into the main living area. Can i make it in unseen? Will be able to get into position successfully?
The whole time you’re wondering whether somebody is about to ruin the surprise. Will a guest suddenly decide they need the bathroom? Will somebody peek during the meditation? Will a bridesmaid accidentally start laughing?
When it’s finally time to make my entrance, I’m usually tip-toeing through the house wearing nothing but a small black apron. As I move through the room, I’ll often put a finger to my lips and quietly gesture for anyone who spots me to keep the secret.
Unfortunately, not everyone gets the message.
I’ve had plenty of perfectly planned surprises ruined by a guest gasping, laughing, or blurting out, “Oh my God!” before everyone opens their eyes. The entire room immediately knows something is happening and the surprise is over before it even starts.
When it works properly though, it’s brilliant.
I quietly move into position directly in front of the bride-to-be while everybody still has their eyes closed. Once I’m standing there and she still has absolutely no idea what’s about to happen, the hardest part is done.

The Big Reveal
The teacher finishes the meditation and asks everybody to slowly open their eyes.
That’s usually when the screaming starts.
Every bride reacts differently. Some instantly cover their face. Some burst out laughing. Some stare in complete disbelief while their friends completely lose it around them.
After giving the room a moment to recover, the teacher smiles and says:
“If you haven’t already realised, we won’t be drawing the fruit today.”
The model then steps forward and announces:
“Before we get started, I think I’m a little overdressed.”
The bride is invited to help remove the apron. She holds onto one end of the ties while the model steps forward, pulling the bow loose and letting the apron drop away.
The room erupts again.
The ice is completely broken, everybody is laughing, and before a single drawing has started the class already feels like a success.

The First Pose
Once the laughs settle down, the class begins.
The first pose is usually short and simple. This gives everybody a chance to get comfortable and work out what they’re doing. Most guests quickly discover that drawing the human body is much harder than it looks.
Thankfully nobody cares.
The worse the drawings are, the funnier the class usually becomes.

The Bride Gets Picked On
Every good life drawing class has a moment where the bride becomes the centre of attention.
Not in a mean way.
In a hens party way.
A good model quickly works out what sort of bride they’re dealing with. Some are confident from the start. Others spend the first ten minutes hiding behind their wine glass.
One of my favourite ice breakers is spotting the bride sitting quietly at the back of the room and saying:
“I think the beautiful bride-to-be might be a little short-sighted. I’d better move closer so she can see what she’s drawing.”
That usually gets a laugh.
Then I’ll move directly in front of her, strike a pose, and suddenly the entire room is focused on her reaction. The bride goes bright red, her friends start cheering, and the class instantly relaxes.
Once that first big laugh happens, everybody settles in and starts enjoying themselves.

Comparing The Artwork
Towards the end of the class comes one of the funniest parts.
The artwork reveal.
Everybody starts holding up their drawings and comparing results.
Every class has one guest who quietly turns out to be incredibly talented. Nobody saw it coming. She’ll casually hold up a sketch that actually looks like the model and suddenly everybody is asking why she never mentioned she could draw.
Then there’s the guest who spent the entire class insisting she wasn’t taking the activity seriously.
She’s making jokes.
She’s barely looking at the paper.
She doesn’t seem particularly impressed with the whole situation.
Then the drawings get revealed and everyone discovers she’s spent ninety minutes drawing exactly the same thing from every angle imaginable.
Not the pose.
Not the model.
Just one particular body part.
Zoomed in.
Taking up the entire page.
Every single drawing.
By the third reveal the entire group is usually crying with laughter.
And then there are the guests who confidently announce at the beginning that they’re creative. Sometimes they produce masterpieces. Other times they produce drawings that look like the model has somehow been involved in a serious farming accident.
Nobody remembers who produced the best artwork.
People remember the laughs.

Why Life Drawing Works So Well
A lot of hens party activities divide the group.
Life drawing tends to do the opposite.
Everybody is participating. Everybody is laughing at the same moments. Everybody has a reason to interact.
It works surprisingly well for mixed groups too. Friends, sisters, cousins, work colleagues, mothers and future in-laws all end up sharing the same experience.
That’s one of the reasons life drawing has become one of the most popular hens party activities in Australia.

Whether you’re looking for a drag queen hosted class, a paint and sip experience, or a professional life drawing model in your city, there’s an option to suit every group.

Is Life Drawing Worth It?
Absolutely.
Not because of the drawings.
Not because of the model.
Because for however long you have booked, everybody is laughing, participating, and making memories together.
And that’s usually exactly what a great hens party is all about.
