The Perfect Blue Lagoon Recipe

Lets capture a slice of the bluest Caribbean sky in a glass, that’s the Blue Lagoon cocktail. This drink is tall, brilliantly blue, and wonderfully refreshing. It’s a simple, vibrant mix of vodka, blue curaçao, and lemonade that you will instantly want to dive into. It’s the perfect, breezy escape from a long day!

What You Need: Blue Lagoon Ingredients

You only need three main ingredients for this stunning cocktail!

  • 30ml Vodka
  • 30ml Blue Curaçao
  • 120ml Lemonade
  • Optional Garnish: Lemon wheel, maraschino cherry

A still life composition showing the ingredients for a Blue Lagoon cocktail alongside the finished drink. Ingredients include a bottle of vodka, a bottle of Blue Curaçao, lemons, a bottle of clear soda/mixer, maraschino cherries in a bowl, and a jigger and mixing spoon. The finished cocktail is in a hurricane glass, garnished with an orange slice and cherries, set against a warm yellow background.

Shaking Up the Blue Lagoon: The Method

This cocktail is all about keeping things icy cold and vibrant!

  1. Chill Your Glass: Fill a highball or hurricane glass with ice cubes and let it chill while you mix the drink. Discard any melted water before serving.
  2. Combine & Stir: Pour the vodka and the blue curaçao directly into your chilled glass. Give it a quick stir to combine the base spirits.
  3. Top It Off: Slowly top the mixture with the 120ml of cold lemonade. The lemonade adds that crucial fizz and bright, tart note.
  4. Final Flourish: Garnish with a bright lemon wheel placed on the rim and drop a maraschino cherry right into the blue abyss for a pop of red.
  5. Time to Make: About 2 minutes (It’s that fast!).

The background features the ingredients for a Blue Lagoon cocktail, including bottles of vodka and Blue Curaçao, lemons, a bottle of mixer, a jigger, and a bowl of maraschino cherries, all set against a warm yellow backdrop.

🧐The History Behind the Blue Hue

Everything you need to know about the Blue Lagoon is right there in the name, it’s stunningly blue! But did you know this drink has an amazing past? It’s believed that the cocktail was actually created by Andy MacElhone, the son of the famous bartender Harry MacElhone, at Harry’s New York Bar in Paris back in the late 1960s or early 1970s. So, yes, this cocktail predates that iconic 1980 movie by several years!

🍊The Star Ingredient: Blue Curaçao

The beautiful blue colour and the zesty flavour come directly from blue curaçao. This is actually a Caribbean liqueur made using the dried peel of the Laraha citrus fruit. The fruit itself is native to the island of Curaçao, and the peel provides a sweet, zesty, slightly bitter note, and then it is coloured blue to give us that signature lagoon look.

  • Vodka: Provides a clean, sturdy base for the drink.
  • Blue Curaçao: Adds sweet, zesty notes and, of course, the vibrant blue colour.
  • Lemonade: This isn’t just a filler; it lengthens the drink, lends additional tartness, and keeps the beverage light and “quaffable.”

Six tall, iced glasses of bright Blue Lagoon cocktails are lined up on a light wooden table against a warm, gold-toned background. Each cocktail is garnished with an orange slice and two maraschino cherries on a skewer. Several melted ice cubes and a few stray cherries are scattered on the table in the foreground.

Choosing Your Curaçao: Brand Breakdown

When shopping for blue curaçao, you’ll find a few brands on the shelf. The quality of this liqueur really impacts the flavour of your final cocktail, so it’s worth getting a decent one!

  • Bols Blue Curaçao: This is the most widely available and a solid choice for home bars. It provides a sweet, pronounced citrus flavour and a very deep blue colour.
  • Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao (Orange): While this version is typically orange (not blue), it’s considered one of the highest quality curaçaos. If you wanted to try a traditional daiquiri with a similar flavour profile but without the colour, this is the bottle to grab.
  • Monin Blue Curaçao Syrup (Non-Alcoholic): If you want to make a blue mock tail for the kids or designated drivers, Monin makes a fantastic non-alcoholic syrup that gives you the flavour and the colour without the alcohol.

In the foreground, three bottles are displayed: Bols Blue Curaçao, Pierre Ferrand Dry Curaçao (orange label), and Monin Blue Curaçao Syrup. The cocktails are garnished with orange slices and cherries, and the foreground has orange peels, mint leaves, and ice cubes.

Got a question about our cocktails?

Our cocktails are fun! And we bet you have heaps of questions. Here are the most common questions hens organisers have asked us. Your question not answered here? Reach out to us!

What type of glass is best?

Use a highball glass or a hurricane glass. The key is tall and narrow to show off that beautiful blue colour and allow space for plenty of ice.

Can I use dark rum instead of vodka?

You could, but then it becomes a completely different drink! The purpose of the vodka is to be a clean base that lets the blue curaçao’s citrus flavour dominate. Dark rum would add too much colour and heavy flavour, completely changing that signature light taste.

Why does the recipe call for such a specific amount of blue curaçao?

Blue curaçao is very sweet, so sticking to the 30ml measurement (equal to the vodka) keeps the cocktail from becoming syrupy. It strikes that perfect balance of sweet, tart, and boozy.

Can I use different citrus juice instead of lemonade?

Yes! You can replace the lemonade with a mixture of soda water and about 60ml of fresh lemon or lime juice for a sharper, less sweet profile. The lemonade is definitely the easiest route, though!
